How do you get it, what are the circumstances, is there a board for it, is it good or bad? Is there like an instruction for it.

failure to adapt, at least in the air force, means an honorable discharge. like "it just diden't work out" or "too homesick" etc.
it was offered to me on several occasions when i was complaining of homesickness. (i think allot of people in basic and tec school tend to take it.)
BUT some people have tried to get back in to the military years later (when they feel they are ready)– NOT EASY!
so be careful
FTA means basically, you cannot handle the military lifestyle. it is usually granted in basic training or intial schooling. sometimes it will happen once you hit the 'real military, but generally speaking not once you have been in more than say 6/8 months.
its neither good nor bad but if you get one you WILL NOT be offered a second chance 5 years down the road after you claim to have 'matured' or 'miss the lifestyle'
they will teach u everything.. if your thinking of joining talk to a recruiter.
