Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction
Truth is stranger than fiction. This section shows excerpts of Soldiers Diaries. In describing the scenes in which they were participants and eyewitnesses, the soldier-historians make no pretense of literary grace or perfection. The very simplicity and directness of their language make the entries all the more attractive and gripping. It is to some extent the language of the man in the street which, as Emerson says, cannot be mended. Those who wrote of their experiences, after passing through a veritable hell on earth are either battle-scarred or maimed for life.
