The answer to this is that we can see some things, looking back, much more clearly than they could see looking forward. Secessionists confidently predicted that there would be no civil war, or, if there were, that the South would ultimately and perhaps easily win. That they were wrong was not necessarily obvious in 1860 or the beginning of 1861.

They probably did about as well or better than could have been expected — from the perspective of someone lookkng back, with the advantge of 20-20 hindsight. – Gary Charbonneau
